Kids in the Kitchen

Virtual Cook-Along Classes
for youth age 9-17 (no experience in the kitchen required)
This pilot program is possible thanks to a grant from Ottawa Community Foundation
and local partners

Here is how it works
Youth register for a series of three different cooking-alongs.  A parent or adult in the home must agree to supervise every cook-along night.  YOMA will deliver most of the key ingredients to your home the afternoon of the cook-along. There will be enough ingredients for 3-4 people in your home to enjoy the what is being prepared.  Participants will also receive a list of any standard pantry ingredients and kitchen items you will need for each cook-along.

Confirmed participants will receive the Zoom login information the day of the cook-along.  Everyone will login on Zoom at the designated time and cook the planned menu together, following the instructions of our culinary trained chef.  Every youth must be supervised by an adult in the home every night.  Youth will learn basic food handling and preparation techniques.  A local food producer has been invited every night to talk about an ingredient and how it is grown or raised.  At the end of the call, the youth and their families can enjoy what has been prepared and then yes, everyone can do the dishes together.  

The Series
There will be four series of three cook-alongs starting in September.  Each series will be different and every series will build on skills learned in the last one.  Youth will learn more and try more as Kids in the Kitchen proceeds.

Series 1  The Basics – This Series is FULL 
September 22 – Featured ingredient “Eggs”
September 29 – Featured ingredient “Potatoes”
October 3 – Featured ingredient “Rice”

Series 2  Simple Meals – This Series is FULL
October 13 – Spaghetti Sauce
October 20 – Beef Tacos with homemade Pico de Gallo
October 27 – Homemade Pizza

Series 3 – Desserts – registration will open in October – This Series is FULL
November 10 – Squares
November 17 – Crisps
November 24 – Cookies

Series 4 – registration will open in December – This Series is FULL
*NOTE – This series involves making multiple dishes in the class so the pace will be different than in previous series.  Some experience in the kitchen is a benefit and will help them feel successful.

January 12  – Chilli and Garlic Bread
January 19 –  Stuffed Pasta Shells and Salad
January 26 –  Kabobs with Rice

Space is limited
There are limited spaces available for each series.  We do ask that youth and their families commit to one full series of three cook-alongs when registering.  We are able to offer this pilot program thanks to a grant from Ottawa Community Foundation.  If it proves successful, Kids in the Kitchen could become a permanent part of YOMA programming.
